Universities are meant to be the guardians of the education system making sure that all the institutes of whom they are taking care provide quality and ethical education to students to make them responsible citizens of India. Think about the situation were the university itself fails to uphold the basic qualities expected from a citizen such as honesty and ethics to what they do, then how can we expect them to mold students of the country into responsible citizens of tomorrow.
Delhi University (DU) one of the most prominent and well-established universities of India located in the capital of the country has been looting its dear students for time immemorial. DU has earned around Rs 30 million in a time span between 2015 to 2018 only from the revenue coming through revaluation, providing copies of answer sheet and rechecking papers. They have earned Rs 2.89 Cr by from revaluation of answer sheets, Rs 0.23 Cr from rechecking and Rs 6.49 lakh by giving copies of answer sheets to student’s between 2015 to 2018. Currently, they are charging around Rs1000 for revaluation and Rs 750 for rechecking. This a humungous amount to be charged against a student when he/she wants to check their answer sheets for any discrepancy. According to the law of the land under RTI section 2(j) nobody can charge anyone for seeing or taking note of a document under public authority.
Universities don’t seem to follow the laws mandated by the country and are following their heart. A question which should arise in our mind should be why we are paying in the first place for the mistakes of the university. If a person gives application for his or her paper for revaluation and gets more marks than earlier it’s due to the inefficiency of the university employees and the penalty is being paid by the student.
Recently a student passed out from Delhi University filed a case against DU demanding to show him his answer sheet and Central Information Commission (CIC) gave a verdict to show him his answer sheet which they have not shown till now and are planning to challenge the verdict of CIC in the high court. The question arising is why universities are so adamant in earning only from revaluation and rechecking. Most of the students are unable to withstand these extravagant amounts.
Universities may be thinking if they won’t keep a fee for revaluation and rechecking a lot of people may apply which could be impossible for them to cater. This problem could be solved either by keeping the fees to a nominal rate so that there are fees which have to be paid for availing the service hence keeping the bogus applications behind the fence. The second way is to refund the current amounts to the students if there is any change in their marks.
This is high time that as responsible citizens of India we take a stand against unrighteous behavior and fight for justice. Freedom and justice don’t come freely to anyone we have to fight for it even if it means fighting against the whole system because at the end the truth shall always prevail.
